FWIW, I use a combination of Seagate and Western Digital, some of which have tens of thousands of hours on the clock, and have been happy with the performance and reliability of both. I wouldn't worry too much about what brand of drive you buy. You can configure this in the Time Machine preference pane. But when you need to backup many different files or even the entire Mac, you are recommended to use a Mac backup software such as SuperDuper, Carbon Copy Cloner and so on, which allow users to create a bootable clone easily. Then you can set Time Machine to backup both your internal SSD and your external data drive to your Time Machine drive.

One for your data (say 1TB) and another for Time Machine (say 2TB). Your external hard drive should at least be the same size as your Macs internal drive. Good data backup practice, however, follows the golden 3-2-1 rule in which at least three copies of your data are kept to ensure against any form of loss. If you only intend on using the back up files on a MAC then the OS Extended would be the better choice.
I prefer NTSF because its MAC and Windows compatible, meaning you can use the stored files on both types of computers.
You can store other data on the drive if you want but I wouldn't recommend it because you wouldn't have a backup of that additional data, which kind of defeats the purpose of having a backup drive to begin with. This is great, but out-of-the-box Time Machine only backs up your data to an external physical drive or a local NAS system that supports the Time Machine protocols. Sure, any external HDD will work with Time Machine back up.as long as its formatted in MAC OS Extended (Journaled) or NTSF. As mentioned, Time Machine will continue to make incremental backups until the drive is full before it deletes older backups. A 500GB drive is more than enough to backup a Macbook with 128GB of storage.
